About the Department

The Department of Zoology was establishedin theyear 1970. In the beginning, there were 2 English medium sections,later in the year 1972 Telugumedium section was started. Department has excellent infrastructure. It has spacious laboratory. Lab is well equipped with instruments like Compound Microscope, Dissecting Microscope, Oven, Incubator, Microtome, Electrical Projection Microscope, Fridge, Binocular, Hot Water bath, Hot plate etc. Zoological museum evokes interests in the students & also visitors. The Department has very rich collection of rare specimens. It has preserved bodies of animals like KhavaleManjar, Owl, Monkey, Duck, Kingfisher, Squirrel, Parrot, tortoise, King Cobra, Shark. Skeleton Fowl Varanus, Rabbit, Frog etc. Educational charts, diagrams, practical instruments related to syllabus are displayed to enhance learning potential the students.

    Department of Zoology organized the lab Exposure programe for Govt. Primary School students in the year 2016, in which the teachers and students actively participated and spent the quality time in the department.

    The Department of Zoology under the guidance of Dr. Sikander Ali khan and headship of Dr. Hema Rani organized a national seminar on Recent trends in parasitology.

    A seminar titled Echinodermateswas conducted on 18th March, 2021 by Dr. S. Srivani, Associate professor, Sarojini Naidu VanithaMahavidyala

    Hypersensitivity
    A seminar titled Hypersensitivity was conducted by Dr. Bhargavi, Vice Principal, Sarojini Naidu Vanitha Mahavidyala.

    A seminar titled Tuberculosis was conducted on by Ms. Blessy Madhukar from World vision Organization.

    Department every year organize the field trips to NEHRU ZOOLOGICAL PARK to study and understand the natural habit and habitat of the animals.

    Visit to Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB)
    Staff along with the students' visit to CCMB on the occasion of the open day of CCMB to inculcate the research interest among the students towards the subject .

    Field visit to National Institute Of Nutrition -ICMR on 25-02-2022
    On occasion of NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK 2022, a festival was organized by NIN as a part of "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Celebrations" commemorating 75th year of Independence. Staff and students have participated in the event.

    Visit to OU CAMPUS
    To study the different types of species of insects in their habitat. Every year department of zoology organizes a field trip to OU Campus.

    Visit to Institute of Forest Biodiversity
    Department of zoology organized a field trip to "Institute of Forest Biodiversity" to enrich the knowledge of students towards the biodiversity and natural habitat on 07-03-2019

  • a) Mr. Tharun & Pradeep of B.Sc. Ist year participated in inter college compititions at Sarojini Naidu Vanitha Mahavidyalaya presentation and won Ist for Rare Species of Snakes.

    b) This year students of IInd year were motivated to participate in the inter college competitions at Aurora Degree & P.G College. Mr. Rahul & Mr. Abhinav has won 1st prize in the event scientific movie making.

    c) Ms. Nafeesa Khatoon is awarded gold medal by OGA in Numaish 2022 as meritorious student.

    d) Ms. Pooja paricipated in National science day at keshav memorial Colleges. Won Ist prize.

    e) Ms. Neha Moinuddin of B.Sc.(B.Z.C) final year, working as Technical Assistant at National Institute of Nutrition(NIN).

Report on Outreach Programme

Date: 56th Feb 2024

Objective: To sensitize the students toward their duties and responsibilities within the society and community.

Outcome: The Department of life Sciences has organized an outreach programme on 5th February 2024 at Government girls high school, picket, West Marredpally.

Students from all the streams participated in the programme and demonstrated various experiments to the students of 8th, 9th , 10th classes.

The main aim of this programme is to raise awareness about life sciences and to grasp the interest of the students by practically demonstrating the experiments.

The following are the demonstrations

  • Rate of transpiration using cobalt chloride paper
  • Blood typing
  • Stomatal types
  • Mitosis and Meiosis (cell division)

Resources utilized: Microscopes, slides, black board, leaves, blood samples of the students and teachers.

Feedback: The students and teachers of the government school were extremely thankful for the demonstrations done.
